Bostancı metro station: M4, M8 and Marmaray explained

Two different metro stations share the name Bostancı. Which is the M4, which is the M8, why they do not connect, and how Marmaray fits in.

Search for the Bostancı metro station and you will find two answers. Two different stations carry the name, on two different lines, and they are not the same place. This guide explains which is which, how Marmaray fits in, and what to ask when a listing only says “near the metro”. It gives no timetables or journey times, because those change. For current services, check Metro İstanbul before you travel.

Bostancı metro station: two stations, one name

The M4 and the M8 each have a station called Bostancı. They share a name, but they do not connect. First, the M4 station is inland, underground beneath the Bostancı road interchange. Second, the M8 station is on the coast. In addition, Marmaray has its own Bostancı station on Bağdat Caddesi. As a result, one name can mean three different railway stops.

M8 Bostancı metro station: the coastal terminus

M8 Bostancı is the southern end of the Bostancı–Parseller line. The line opened on 6 January 2023, has 13 stations and runs driverless and underground. Its terminus stands on the Kadıköy–Maltepe boundary, which is why some sources place it in one district and some in the other. From this station you can transfer to Marmaray, to the Şehir Hatları pier and to the İDO terminal beside it. Going north, the first stops are Emin Ali Paşa, Ayşekadın and Kozyatağı.

M4 Bostancı: the inland station on the way to Sabiha Gökçen

M4 Bostancı opened on 17 August 2012, together with the first section of the line, from Kadıköy to Kartal. It also lies in Kadıköy. Counting from Kadıköy, it is the eighth of the 23 stations now in service, and fifteen stops remain before Sabiha Gökçen Airport. Later, the airport section opened on 2 October 2022. The neighbouring stations are Kozyatağı towards Kadıköy and Küçükyalı towards the airport. We give no minutes here, because the operator’s own timetable is the only reliable source.

There is no M4–M8 interchange at Bostancı: use Kozyatağı

However, this is the point that catches people out. The two Bostancı stations do not link, and none of the sources we checked gives a walking distance between them. The interchange between the lines is Kozyatağı. From M8 Bostancı, Kozyatağı is three stops away. From M4 Bostancı, it is one stop back towards Kadıköy. For that reason, a trip from the coast to the airport goes by M8 to Kozyatağı, and then by M4.

Marmaray at Bostancı: Suadiye to the west, Küçükyalı to the east

Bostancı railway station first opened in 1872. It was rebuilt and reopened on 12 March 2019, the day the whole Halkalı–Gebze Marmaray line opened. In total, it has three tracks. An island platform serves Marmaray, and an edge platform serves high-speed and intercity trains. The Marmaray neighbours are Suadiye to the west and Küçükyalı to the east. High-speed (YHT) trains have been listed at Bostancı, but check TCDD Taşımacılık for today’s services before you plan around them.

Which Bostancı metro station does a listing mean?

Treat the word “metro” in an advert as a question, not an answer. First, ask the agent which station is meant: M4 Bostancı, M8 Bostancı or the Marmaray station. Next, ask which line you would use for your daily journey. Then ask which mahalle the address sits in. The M8 terminus is on a boundary, so that last answer matters. Our guide to Bostancı or Altıntepe shows how to check it. The pier is the sea link, and the Bostancı ferry and pier guide covers it.
